More Lawn Advice Please
« on: May 03, 2018, 19:06 »
The lawn has had its first cut since weed, feed, moss.  I can now see the black moss patches.  Should I use the newly found, rake, and get all the rubbish out ?

Also there is a dip about the size of the top of a bucket (I think it was a bucket full of concrete at one time, which housed the rotary line)  I know it was dug out a long time ago and filled, but this winter it has dropped a little bit.

So what do I do next please,  Mrs Bouqet

If the moss is black, it's dead, so get raking! Don't get too carried away and start damaging any new grass shoots - probably best to do it in a couple of sessions a few days apart (it's hard work anyway.)

The 'official' way of levelling dips in lawns is to use a sharp spade to remove the turf from the sunken area, adding soil to fill the dip, and then replacing the turf (some trial and error required!)

I've successfully filled small dips by simply adding soil on top of the sunken area and letting the grass grow back through - obviously a bit easier but you can't add too much in one go, and it will look a little unsightly for a while.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

thanks jayc,  Fortunately the rake and scarifyer I found are electric, and it collects and compacts rather like a mower.  Shall I buy top soil, to try and level the dip, I cannot lift the turf because I am not strong enough.I shall be on to it this weekend.  cheers, Mrs Bouquet

Can you not 'borrow' a bit of topsoil from elsewhere?

Don't use bought or home made compost as a substitute though - both are almost entirely organic so would eventually disappear, leaving you more or less back where you started.

I thought about using some of last years multi-purpose, which I have just emptied out of the pots.
Will that do ?  Mrs Bouquet

No apology required Mrs. B - I didn't think for a moment it was deliberate.
