All I can say is that it's not worked for others that I know. Mesh has worked for me. The first year on my current plot, I skipped 6 wheelbarrows of carrots, (not protected in any way as I was unaware of the carrot  fly issue there).  Mesh has kept them clean.

I'm not in the habit of changing a winning formula!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Veg growing is often about "playing the percentages" - the theory about the scent from onion leaves masking the scent of the carrots by which the fly locates them is sound enough, but carrot flies are such weak fliers that some are bound to find their way by "accident" (blown there by the wind, for example.)

Unlike, for instance, a bit of slug damage on lettuces or radishes, even a minor attack of carrot fly can leave them beyond minor surgery and therefore completely inedible.

Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

after a few seasons of trying 'c r a p' like companion planting i tried 2 methods, firstly enviromesh and secondly in a barrel 2 feet off the ground.
both work 100% but enviromesh is better cos u dont have as much watering to do.the enviromesh has to be buried all the way round tho .

if you use the lacy kind the carrot fly just move the curtains an inch to watch you gardening in a judgemental way while phoning the police

its very frustrating when you set rows of carrots only to find that the  carrot fly has attacked your crop

every night i watch the introduction for Anglia news there's about a three second picture of a carrot harvester working in the field harvesting what must be tonnes of carrots destined for the supermarkets :D

and i can't even get 2 rows of good  carrots they are obviously using something i don't or can't use and before you say Lottie or home grown carrots taste better this may be rite but the carrot producers sell many tonnes to the consumer every year :)

come on someone tell me what they use its got to be for commercial use only and probably poisonous and you probably need to be booted and suited to use it

You've answered your own question in your posting.  :tongue2:

I do have the satisfaction of carrots you can taste with no pests and no chemicals.

Anyone used Nemasys "Grow Your Own" mixture of nematodes.

They claim it contols Carrot and cabbage root fly, leatherjackets, cutworms, onion fly, ants, sciarid fly, catterpillars, gooseberry sawfly, thrips, codling moth.

The leaflet says £5 per 60 sq m. Presumably this has to be applied several times?

Degrees of carrot fly by?

I've grown carrots (at least four long rows across the plot sown at different times) every year for the last seven years or more. Every year there is some carrot fly damage.

I have not (so far) used any artificial barrier. The companion planting method, although interesting to read about, is not something I have used with serious intention...if at all it's been more by chance.

A fair few of my carrots do have some surface / superficial carrot fly damage but rarely is this more than a veg peeler deep or, in the worse cases, so bad that a carrot is completely unusable.

Lucky I guess or, before anyone else says it, I grow lousy carrots that carrot fly aren't interested in!
Personally I love them!! (carrots not the fly)

I grow mainly Autumn King but I tried Resistafly with even better results.. almost no damage at all but the flavour is not quite so good.

In the beds at school we have never had a single carrot fly ruined carrot, whereas at the plot... welll!!!

There are none in that area, and none in the soil to hatch out, and no-one else anywhere near growing carrots either.

So the solution is.... move somewhere desolate to grow good carrots

(or buy some netting  )
