Thank you for going to the trouble of posting those Swing Swang - that's really IS useful.  :)

Peas seem good 'n' tall to me.  Your conditions are more sheltered perhaps that's the difference, but I'm using the slightly less windy side this year so it could work, once the apple tree's in full leaf anyhow.  And they still grow up the top half without netting?  I'm surprised - but I can see it works.

I'm still slightly baffled as to why the birds don't eat them - you do have birds, don't you?

Thanks - three years ago it had 27 laurel trees on it - blood, sweat, tears, time and enthusiasm!

My problem last year was that the peas' tendrils and foliage got so tangled up in the netting that I could never remove it to pick any.  :(  I'm going to take a chance and not net them this year. Otherwise it all just seems like too much trouble for the amount you get and the time they take to prepare.

I grew the Victoriana Heritage variety last year on Munty type frames and whilst the plants grew tall and very fast I found them not as productive as the Suttons that I grew last year and the heritage variety required a lot more climbing around to get the pods off.  Overall more work for less, so I will be reverting to another (shorter!) variety this year.  Never any bird problems, though since I have bird scaring tape around the whole plot.  Keeps the neighbours on their toes (used to keep them awake on windy nights) but they have cropping priviledges so the first crop tends to shut them up.
When you find yourself agreeing with the consensus, it's time to get another life.
