Giant puffball powder
« on: August 11, 2017, 14:27 »
One for the dehydrator gang  :)

I've been given some of this to try and was advised to add just a little to gravy or sauces for a great mushroom flavour - way more intense than puffball cooked in its natural state.  On doing a bit of googling, it is a highly rated ingredient and people are cooking everything from pancakes to savoury pastries with it and raving about the results.  I'll let you know how I get on, but it smells pretty wonderful.

Giant puffballs are so easy to recognise, even the most hesitant forager would find them easy to ID and its something I have never even thought about doing.

With all the rain, I thought you might want to keep your eyes peeled for a puffball or two  ;)

I made a load of this a few years back and found it didn't mix with water but would mix readily with oil. Shame really, sorry to say it ended up in the compost. Keep us posted how you get on hopefully it'll work for you.

Interesting information.  I'm going to do gravy later, so I'll mix it into the fat in the pan before I add any liquid.

Another use I was told about was mixing it into the roux when making mac and cheese.  As this is about OH's absolute favourite meal, I'm now coming under pressure to try this one

This did eventually happen yesterday and it worked well  :D   I've also mixed some into some fried mushrooms for a quiche today, but that's for OH tomorrow when I am out working, so I'll have to wait for the verdict on that.

I shall keep my eyes open... had a spot of rain too so you never know what might pop up now

It's certainly the only truffle we are likely to be eating.

Quiche and mac and cheese have been eagerly devoured by OH with favourable reviews.  It is Reading Festival week so I have lots of shifts at job no.2 and he's a bit of a latchkey kid until after the weekend.

The provision of nice dinners he just has to shove in the oven keeps a lot of whinging at bay  ;)
