New coop
« on: September 06, 2010, 00:04 »
Just my new coop - no chooks yet - hope to ge tthem this weekend coming.

Just amazed I managed to build it (from a kit) and it still hasn't fallen down!

Flooring for the chooks hasn't been finished yet, they will have a mix of wood shavings etc

Need the slab paving flooring as we have a massive urban fox problem in SW London..family of them live...next door!

The coop is made by Pinnegar and Barnes Stables (google will show up their site), but the one that I got they only make for Southmead Poultry, which is where I hope to get my chooks this weekend. It is the Astcote Deluxe.

"Deluxe" simply meaning it is a taller version of the Astcote, it doesn't come with a jacuzzi or ensuite facilities.... ;-)

Very nice set up jertzee.  My guess is your new girlies will have you making it deluxe pdq - they have a way of fixing you with beedy pleading eyes that soon has you running to fetch greens or other little luxuries  ;)

Please do put some pics on here when your ladies are installed.  What are you getting  :)

That looks really good.  Have you sprayed new coop with Poultry Shield?  If not would recommend it, it deters mites.

Good bedding, as an alternative to wood shavings, is Hemcore.  It's more absorbent, so really easy to poo pick, and therefore lasts longer in between clean outs.  Also, I've found that it composts much more quickly than wood shavings.  I use it in both coop flooring and in the nest boxes.

Girls will appreciate some soft wood chippings if you could dump a bale onto the paving.  No need to rake it out, they'll do that!  If you've a fox problem, think you've done the right thing with the paving, but they do like to scratch and dig.
Even if the voices aren't real,
They have some really good ideas!!!
