White pasty / creamy poo - any advice
« on: April 30, 2008, 17:03 »
Hi there

I've had 3 chickens all develop white, pasty creamy poo.
I've wormed them, put apple cider vinegar in water and kept them on layers mash for a couple of days and two are almost back to normal.

One is still looking sorry for herself, not eating much, puffed up and sleeping lots (although she has started grooming herself which is an improvement on yesterday). She still has this white poo (urine?) oozing out occassionally.
I've been giving her some live bio-yogurt and have put her in a bucket of warm water (mainly to wash off the pasty poo so it doesn't irritate her skin but heard it's also good for egg-bound hens). She seems to enjoy this spa treatment but I am increasingly worried about her.
Any advice on home remedies'?

She's a ex-batt who has enjoyed many months of freedom and I'd like her to enjoy many more but without a fortune on vets bills as I figure that with the money I could spend on her I could rehome many more ex-batts instead (I hope you can see the logic in that) so if no improvement soon I will have her put to sleep.

Any advice appreciated!

They've obviously had some type of infection and two have recovered.  Difficult to say what has caused it.  There is a condition called vent gleet which is similar to your description.

Thanks Aunt Sally. The symtoms do sound like the vent gleet description, just odd that my girls have it when it;s usually chicks or male birds. I'll see if the poorly one shows any sign of improvement tomorrow. If any other possible causes or suggestions spring to mind please do let me know. I'll 'google' the treatments in the artlicle to see if they are obtainable. Many thanks.
