Planting out brassicas
« on: July 09, 2010, 10:13 »
I'm planting out my brassicas tonight. They have got quite big whilst waiting patiently for the onions to ripen!
The bed has been prepared with my compost, mushroom compost (well rotted manure), fbb and a good water.
I forgot to lime!!! Did I read on here that you can sprinkle a bit in each hole when planting?
Just confirming because the lime instructions say don't let it have contact with the plant.
Roots are ok are they?

I think you have to leave a couple of weeks between manure and lime as there can be a chemical reaction but perhaps it is the other way round (lime and manure) I forgot to lime too ! ::)

I would think that, as mushroom compost is quite limey, you will be fine without adding any more :)

But yes usual advise is not to manure and lime at the same time.

for 5yrs i've lightly limed the beds in winter and dusted the planting holes/root ball (there is some clubroot on our site) plants typically have grown well and no club root.
When  i planted my 1st calabrese this year i forgot to dust :(
When i lifted the spent plants tonight clubroot on 3 of 12 >:(
So for me in my location i'm taking it as a lesson learned, Dust Dust Dust :D :D

Apparently the objection to liming and manuring at the same time is that the initial interaction releases ammonia, which being a gas is lost to the atmosphere, thus wasting some of the nitrogen in the manure. It's mainly a problem if the manure and/or the lime is on the surface as underground the ammonia is recaptured in the soil water (if any!)

On that basis I would think that a dusting of lime in the bottom of the hole would be OK, although as Mum says spent mushroom compost is usually quite limey anyway.........

Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older
