New Secateurs
« on: January 11, 2010, 13:01 »
Fed up with cheap secateurs that fall apart after one season I have decided to buy a decent pair for general pruning ( fruit bushes roses etc.,) should I buy anvil or bypass? Advice and opinions please.

A pair of Felco bypass secateurs will see you right for many years, or till you lose `em. :)

My strong Christmas present hint was luckily heeded, so I got a pair of Felco bypass secateurs ("the ones the professionals use")

Since they were a replacement for a cheaper pair I managed to lose I also got a very snazzy leather holster for them which attaches to a belt. (Why didn't I think of that before?!)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

unless you are disciplined enough to keep them very sharp, I think anvil secateurs end up just crushing the stems...

also they have less precise control for delicate tip-of-secateur work - they're often very round-ended

I have a pair of the cheaper Felcos and they're going great after 10 years.

Any of the felco range are great! Just 2 points I'd mention:
1) TRY every pair you can, Felcos last so long it's best to get the pair that suits you.
2) They are VERY pinchable, and at the price, you really don't want that to happen. My OH had his taken about 5 years ago and still misses them.
