Maggots in soil?
« on: May 13, 2009, 21:56 »
Just about finished planting up my new raised beds in the garden - been finding quite a few magots / grubs in the soil.  I filled them with council compost, horse manure, purchased top soil and my own compost.  Is this normal and do I need to worry about them in the same way as slugs etc?

Thanks

What colour are they Kermit? Do you have any photos? They could be baddies or goodies you see  :D :D

Ah, ok!  They're quite short and fat, not yellow.  Suppose a kind of grey colour.  I'll try and get a photo tomorrow.  ::)

Are they true maggots with no head or legs. If so they are probably harmless. If they have head or legs they are still probably harmless but may be lavea of something that eats crops. A photo would be good but also a detailed description. Use a hand lens if you have one.

Ooo, that looks like them!  True to form, didnt come across any tonight so no photos.  Away all weekend but pretty sure thats them.  We do get a lot of daddy longlegs around here so makes sense.

So, are they harmful to my seedlings?!   ???
