Cabbages
« on: February 09, 2016, 23:15 »
Whilst I grow other brassicas such as calabrese, PSB and kale, I have never grown cabbages before and as a first attempt picked up a cheap tray of Spring Duchy seedlings in the autumn and planted them on the plot. They seem to be doing ok despite the slugs. So, spurred on, I have bought some seeds. But I am confused about when to sow them. They are Greyhound, January King 3 and (Savoy) Traviata. Do I sow them all in Spring and they just mature at different times of the year? Or are they best sown at different times?

Greyhound is quite flexible, sow some at the end of Feb and into March for harvesting from the end of May - August. Sow another batch in May/June for Autumn harvest.

Sow January King in April/May and harvest from December.

Sow Savoy Traviata in April-June and harvest from December.

Hi Flowertot, I hope you have better luck than I do growing cabbage etc from seed. Real problems last couple of years getting them past seedling stage in modules. Apart from slugs and butterfly caterpillars, pigeons will eat the lot. I grow mine in a walk in wonderwall. Make sure they are well netted. Good luck!
