French climbing bean leaf problem
« on: April 10, 2009, 19:48 »
Hi, please can anyone help?  Some of my French climbing bean (Markant) seedlings have this weird leaf distortion - the one in the photo is particularly bad.  The seeds are organic and I used fresh seed compost and there is no obvious aphid or other bug type activity. Does anyone know what is causing it? Should I start again with them or just see what happens?

Be interesting to know what the compost was made from ? see what the next  leaves are like would be my advice, but I did wonder if traces of aminopryalid have gotten into the potting medium
He who asks is a fool for five minutes, but he who does not ask remains a fool forever.

The compost was Levington John Innes seed compost.  If it is that then does that mean I should get rid of everything that was planted in it? Oh dear!

I'd wait and see what happens with the next set of leaves and do all your beans have the distortion ? I'm no expert but I know occasionally I've had distortion's in leaves and then the plants next leaves where fine. I'd hang on for more leaves and see if you get other answers before making any judgements  :)

No the one in the photo is the worst and a couple of them have no distortion at all.  I planted some dwarf french beans, tomatoes etc at the same time and they all seem fine.  I'll see what happens.

Thanks for your help.

A pleasure, if the Tom's are growing fine I don't think you have to worry about the aminopryalid issue  :)

My approach would be to seek advice from a garden centre. Failing that a head gardener or a horticultural college. You don't seem to have done anything wrong.

You say'some' what percentage are you talking about? They maybe what I call blind seedlings-do they still have a growing point between the leaves?

Separate the dodgy ones and monitor the  rest.  I know there are all sorts of compost on the market today but you have chosen a well known brand. Don't rush into it yet.

I'd say about half of the seedlings are affected but they all seem to be continuing to grow on from between the leaves.
