My lovely cockerel that was given me has rather scaly looking legs,sort of scabby looking and horny which I feel are detracting from his general gorgeousness
My question is could this be scaly leg mite or do some cocks come with thickened scaly legs?

The lady who gave him has others with similar legs but could not tell me yay or nay if it was Leg mite.
how can I tell if its mites and how do I treat if it is and is it difficult to do so?

Sounds like scaly leg mite to me, remember all your birds that have contact with the cockerel will need treating! There are products available to treat the problem!
