Outdoor Tomato help
« on: March 07, 2009, 11:04 »
Hi again,

I was wondering if anyone could advise which of the Tom varieties that I plan to grow will do best outside.

I am growing the following :- Golden Sunrise, Black Cherry, Apero & Costoluto Fiorentino.

These are all types that I am trying for the first time this year and wanted to free up a bit of greenhouse space if poss. I appreciate a lot is dependant on the weather but just wanted to see if anyone has any previous experience with any of the above varieties.

Some varieties specify that they are suited to outdoor growing, but if the weather's good enough any variety will do well outdoors. And if it's really bad they will all do badly and get blight. I'm growing 5 different varieties, as many as I can fit into the greenhouse (as an insurance policy) and the rest will go outside and I will keep my fingers firmly crossed we don't get blighted again.

Think its a bit of a gamble with toms. I grew Red Alert last year, did very well outside, i sheltered them from the wide behind my runner beans. I dont have a greenhouse so no choice as to where i put them. Growing another two types this year, 'Gardener's Delight' (Cordon Indeterminate) and 'Gartenperle' (Bush Determinate) aswell as the left over red alert seeds from last year, so hopefully a good crop this year.
Life is a heap of manure. Growing one minute, stinking the next.

Agree with the above.  They will all do well outside in a sheltered sunny spot.  Black cherry are my personal favourites.
Cheese makes everything better.

Thanks all,

I will try starting 12 plants in the greenhouse then move half outside and see how both lots do. I'm just praying for a good Summer :)

Sugold did well for me 2 and 3 years ago flavour so good most didn't make it back to the kitchen.

Microclimate is all - a sheltered, sunny spot is important. you can help the shelter with netting

Varieties are important too especially in apoor summer.
Where did I see that Swedish tomato seed list ??
It had varieties from Russia and Alaska which matured in a much shorter time and even with lower temperatures
Playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order!

Hi,

I've got 6 each Vintage Wine, Banana Cream, Lemon Tree & Christmas Grape trying to start in south facing windowsill. Along with 24 Alicante which are a small plastic greenhouse in the garden.
I've also got some Money maker which will start at the end of the month.

I intend all of them to go down the allotment, to grow outside, if they work, so be it.
Now your grips too strong
You can't catch love with a net or a gun
Gotta keep faith that your path will change
Gotta keep faith that your luck will change tomorrow

Ildi are tasty, and coped best with last year, although none of mine did well (Ildi managed to ripen a couple of fruit, though, when most didn't even flower).
