Chicken dispatching/culling device?
« on: March 04, 2012, 21:18 »
I have just seen a device used on river cottage for killing chickens. It seemed like you put the chicken upsidown then flick a switch and it takes some of the hands on approach out of killing a chicken. Does anyone know the name of this device or where they can be purchased?

Thanks

The only think I've seen on RC is an electric stunner, which was used prior to killing the birds with a knife. If that's the same thing they aren't cheap, pretty much the domain of the professional slaughterman really...£4-500?

I haven't seen that episode of RC, but my OH has an electric stunner, cost him £700!

I've got a wall mounted dispatcher like this one in Ascott's which I use for sick birds.  third item down

Thanks ladies for your replies. The item look likes a garden gate latch haha,  I wonder if I can make one of these. Are they spring loaded?

If a homemade one doesn't work please dispatch the bird yourself straight away. Buying one could be less stressful in the long run.

no not spring loaded. They have a screw adjuster to alter the depth that you can close them so they suit all breeds of chickens and bantams. For £20+ pounds I would rather buy one that I know will do the job rather than trying to make one that is a bit hit or miss.
If you don't wish to spend that amount there is also the broom handle method (all you need is a broom handle so cheap) - I have done this twice but didn't like it as the second time I did it (this time with a guinea fowl) the head came off. Now I am ok with the head coming off as this obviously happens when using an axe (the first time I culled a chicken was this method) but I wasn't expecting it with the broom handle method.

I use the same device as Grannieannie and Joyful and have used it for all sizes of birds up to Turkeys. It is quick and effective and does take some of the stress out of an unpleasant deed.
