Baking today - I must be mad!
« on: June 29, 2018, 13:44 »
As it's National Cream Tea Day I'm making some Devon Tuffs. These are yeast risen and allegedly more authentic then scones....

The dough is proving now, so hope they are nice :)

You certainly must want your head looking, Mum, says she who spent time in the kitchen yesterday afternoon making strawberry shortcake.  If I hadn't helped to eat the results I would probably have dropped a pound or two because the kitchen was like a sauna. In this heat, they probably won't take long to prove, they'll be climbing out of the bowl before you know it.

I've never heard of Devon Tuffs before, so I've printed off the recipe to try, but not today, I'm not as brave as you.

Those tuffs look very interesting.. I do like yeasted sweet rolls so I am sure I should enjoy these!

We're on chocolate fudge cake with courgettes this afternoon. After  atramp through the countryside with the grandchildren the kitchen may feel relatively cool, who knows?

I’ve just finished a batch of gooseberry jam, it wasn’t too bad in there with all the doors open & the landing windows, mind you I’ve just been to get showered & it smells of jam up there now.

I am in a "Jam Frenzy" too!

Nothing like ordering soft fruit from the supplier, having it arrive all at once and HAVING to jam it on a really hot day or it will go furry!

I'm making gooseberry jam and chutney today.  It's been a fantastic year for gooseberries, and this time I've managed to get there before the birds, although I have left quite a few on the bushes for them as their reward for keeping me company on the plot.

I had to buy all mine as I don't have the garden sorted yet (too dry to rotavate). Soft fruit is expensive, especially raspberries and currants! Gooseberries are not too bad and you can't move for strawberries of course!
