I was just walking away from our plot this evening after spending all afternoon up their digging with no.1 son.  When the Secretary of the plots came up to me and gave us high praise for tackling our plot so well.  He was really impressed..  and from him, that is indeed high praise..

He even gave us one of his cabbages !!! and offered to give me some cabbage plants tomorrow along with giving me a master class on putting spuds in..

I'm really chuffed :)

Thanks chaps and chappesses..

The cabbage was delicious, first fresh cabbage cut and cooked within hours I've had for many years.  It SQUEEKED, when you ate it, I'd forgotten cabbage was like that when it is this fresh.

Flowerlady, its wasn't six ft high grass, more like six ft long roots in a dense mat.  Still the worst is now over and the plot has been completely dug over.

Well done Mandy!

We are tackling our plot at the moment (only had it 8 weeks). Three of us were digging a 3 x 3 metre bed on Sunday. It took hours and it still isn't done. I was the weeder, taking clumps over to loam pile (or whatever you call it) and picking out the long roots and sticking them in a sack. It is thick with em and I can't imagine it ever being rid so kudos to you for clearing yours so well. Wanna do ours? hehe

We see the allotment secretary alot because his wife happens to have to plot next to ours.

I dug a narrow strip for raspberries today, and got seriously bogged down with bracken roots - I'm impressed with 4m bindweed, though!

I'm going to let some bracken grow, as I want to try making soap, and I read the ash of bracken is good for making the lye.  Has anyone done this?  Also, I believe you can eat the very young shoots, or croziers.  Again, any experiences?

I thought Bracken contained traces of cyanide, so not sure about eating it  :?

you can only eat the very young shoots, when they are still folded up, after that its no good for ya,

to be honest if theres summat better to eat leave it. It has to be boiled for ages.
