storing water and water butts help
« on: June 23, 2015, 19:15 »
Hi I am allotment newbie, my plot has trees at one end and underneath is a smallish shed.  This is what drew me to the plot as i have young children and this can become their little den while i am working away.

This leads me to the point i am thinking about how to collect water for watering the plot. Looking at water butts but all articles say to attach guttering to the shed with a downpipe.  But the shed wont get that wet as its sheltered by the trees. .  water is limited onsite they have a metered supply only. Any suggestions possibly as cheap as chips

Move the shed  ;) or trim back the tree, buckets and fill up the water butt after rain. I have two water butts off my greenhouse, keep an eye on freecycle they come up every now and then.

make a roof over the compost heap to a butt maybe, or a covered seating area.

Might sound silly but trees will drip a lot of water on to your shed roof and the amount of rain your roof will get will also depend on what direction the rain comes from especially if it gets a bit windy. Worth a try anyway.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

A lot depends on the type of tree.. i had to stop collecting it at home from a greenhouse roof under a sycamore, as the water turned sour from the sap and killed a lot of seedings.
When i had the lottie we had a huge apple above the shed and that water was fine.

Try the council yard for old wheelie bins. They make great free water butts
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.
