vintage tools
« on: January 04, 2018, 13:11 »
visited a local charity today to buy a pitchfork, i wanted this to make moving manure and straw/hay easier around the beds etc, i had a really good buy with a vintage one with a lovely ash handle , i also bought a small rake  with ash handle about 6 inches for between the rows etc,   a medium rake and took a great fancy to a really old  D handled  digging fork which also came home with me- all the above for £40 an absolute bargain
To me the vintage tools just feel better in the hand and the steel is undoubtedly better quality
all the tools have been cleaned , oiled etc by the charity  but i will give another few coats of linseed  oil before putting them to use

I have, and still regularly use, a rake, draw hoe, Dutch hoe, shovel, small spade and small fork donated to my mum by a family friend over 50 years ago - they were already old then! As you say they just feel better in the hand than modern tools do. I also had a digging fork that unfortunately bent when clearing my first allotment - 2 modern replacements suffered the same fate!
