Blight on Tomatoes?
« on: June 27, 2009, 18:29 »
Hi

Just got a new allotment but I also have a small patch at home.  At home I have some Tumbling Toms hanging basket tomatoes, some Sub Arctic Plenty, and some Anya potatoes.

The hanging basket tomatoes have only been outside for three weeks but they all have dark brown patches all over the leaves.  I initially thought this must be blight but neither the potatoes or the other tomatoes are affected in any way and they are all within two meters of each other.

Is there anything else which causes brown patches on tomato leaves other than blight?

All advice appreciated!

Welcome to the forum. You have not shown your location but so far I think there has been only one report of blight in the country.
Do a search in the forum for 'blight' and you will find some threads with photos. You should then be able to do a comparison.

Welcome, Xpers

Have you tried a liquid foliar feed like maxicrop, or a dose of epsom salts?  If it's not blight then it's probably a nutrient deficiency.

Oh, and they couldn't be drying out in the basket, could they?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Seems obvious but I didn't think of a photo.  Most of the leaves on all the hanging basket toms are similar to this... I have not uploaded a photo before so I hope this works!

I live just outside Southampton in Hampshire.

I think it looks more like sun scald than blight.
Cheese makes everything better.

Yeah I dont think  thats blight, are you feeding them at all? and as said above try and keep the leaves dry when watering.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I am watering well and feeding with a liquid tomato feed every seven days.

If it is sun scald is there anything I can/should do?

You can't do anything about sun scald if it rains during the day, but don't water your plants when the strong sun will catch the leaves before the water dries.

I water mine in the early evening, after the sun's strength has gone a bit, and so the plants can absorb the max amount of water over night whilst it is cooler.
