Broad beans and mice!
« on: March 05, 2011, 13:17 »
No, it's not a recipe you'll be glad to hear!!

I have heard that mice like these when you first plant them and last year was given a tip to deter them.  The tip is to soak them in parafin before planting.  The only thing I can't remember, is how long for?!?!

If it is the same as for peas it is just a quick swirl around in a saucer not a soaking. A few drops in a plastic bag of beans should be enough to deter any seed nibblers.

Daves insanity sauce is a hot chilli sauce that I diluted a few drops in a plant sprayer of water and sprayed the ground after mice kept digging up my peas. They did not dig them up after this - either it masks the smell of the peas or the mice dont like the taste. It might be less toxic than paraffin.

Perhaps it just makes the mice dissolve instantly into a small pool of fur?  :)

left some broad bean plants last year in the garden (aquadulce) to go to seed.
Was surprised early this year to see that a mouse had taken the seeds and buried them under some black plastic and had began to grow.
The plants are now approx 6" tall and a couple have flowers on

Anyway i was praising the little mouse for doing my work for me but wanted to grow 'the sutton ' this year so off i trotted to the shops and brought a packet.
Decided to start them off in my greenhouse.Went to check a week later and a flipping mouse had pinched the lot and nowhere to be seen >:(
.....off i trott to the shops again :tongue2: ........

Try soaking them in a small plastic cup of parrafin for 2 hours.  Them pesky mices will stay well away!!  ;)
