Using creosoted wood
« on: June 09, 2012, 14:32 »
Hi

We are taking down an old shed which has 1" thick oak tongue and grove boards from an old flatbed lorry, and I thought of using them to edge the plot down the allotment

But I can smell that some of them have been creosoted in the past. Would there be a potential danger of using these as edging boards, or should we just dump them?

Thanks
Damon

If you can still smell it and even when you can't any more but less so, there's a chance it will leach out. You could line the beds - I assume that is what you want to edge - with sturdy plastic sheeting.

I was about to say the same as Argyllie. Smell should tell you the decision - dump them. At our tips, there's even a special area for creosoted wood because it's such a hazard item.

It was just to be used to line the perimeter of the paths on the plot, but even still, it won't pay to take the risk

Thanks for your sdvice guys - I shall get the rubbish collection man to take them with the rest of the wood

I find nothing wrong with my creosoted sleepers wrapped in pond liner, even my greenhouse is built on them and there is no smell or any other problems.

Thanks, this thread has been dormant for a while and it was already suggested that wrapping in sturdy plastic sheeting was an option. :)
