Finally done it!
« on: November 11, 2018, 21:19 »
I've finally grown a cauliflower without it blowing!
None of the old boys can recall anyone else doing at our site so I'm well pleased :) I've failed with them several times before, but growing a winter variety in the polytunnel has spoiled them enough that they've grown great.
Modelled by the sprog who enjoyed his cauliflower cheese tonight!

Well done you  :D they are difficult beggars.
No rhyme or reason, just seems that sometimes they work and sometimes they don't  ::)

I share your delight. I have already had one cauliflower this season and will pick the second later this week. First time I have managed perfect white caulks. No fly, no slugs and no dirt. Happy days

Last year I did the same - the cauli was about the size of a large grapefruit. A neighbour plot holder came across and said "ere - do you want this" and presented me with a cauli the size of a beach ball. "they've all come together at once" he said. Probably an F1 variety. I took it home and told my wife I had grown it, but then confessed over Sunday tea when daughter and husband came for cauliflower cheese (and a roast of course). Very humbling!

Well done I understand your pleasure. I managed 2 this year both not very big & only just caught them before they were gone over.

Can you still eat them if they blow?

I have in the past, but it normally means there is not much to eat on them as they tend to go early for me.
