wildflower meadow
« on: August 12, 2014, 14:20 »
Hi all,

We have a patch of long grass and weeds, probably about 5 or 6 sqm at the back of our garden which we'd like to turn into a wildflower meadow. Whats the easiest way to do this? Can we just dig out the weeds and buy plug plants of say poppies, cornflowers, ox-eye daisies etc and plant this autumn? Have quite a few other things on and would like to avoid clearing the whole area and starting from scratch with a seed bed if at all possible.

Many thanks for ay tips!

Meadow flowers like quite a poor soil so gove it a go as the grass will compete with nutrients.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Thanks,

Just being doing some reading and I think I'll cut the grass dig out the weeds and sow some wildflower seeds in pots over the winter then stick them in in spring. Does that sound like a plan?

I think they covered this recently in Gardeners World or Question Time, and if I remember rightly grass will outcompete so needs to be removed first.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Heard that one and it was pointed out that yellow rattle will help to suppress the grass.
