Mushroom compost
« on: December 06, 2006, 18:39 »
I'm toying with the idea of buying a bulk order of mushroom compost. I know that lime sweetens the soil and my understanding is that spent compost generally contains rotted horse manure and lime (unless the lime's been skimmed off). I also know that the 2 don't generally mix but that shouldn't be a problem since the product I'm looking at has been further composted. Does anyone use mushroom compost and, if not, why not (apart, perhaps, from cost)?

grab what ya can now matey.. other folks probably dont use it as its hard to get hold of.. dump loads on the plot and then store loads , i would have ten tonnes at a time if  they would gimme it  , take some home and get ya self a few mushies going in the airing cupboard. spray water  with a fine sprayer on the surface  and leave to bloom
still alive /............

I don't think the spores will be active as the compost has also been sterilised. And there's another question - there'll be some organic matter to dig in but will there be enough nutrients to make it worthwhile?

Thanks - I'm persuaded. Now all I have to do is persuade the wife and save the money up - when I say bulk order I mean bulk - upwards of 1 tonne!

Nothing closer that I've seen. It is dear - I've seen 3 tonnes for £120 but that's even further and I worry about the "food miles" being burned up.

can i suggest you dont bother and go to a farm with dairy cattle and buy manure , they will usually drop a trailer load off .about 3 tonnes for £30 .i cannot see the value in buying your compost ,both in return and transport  petrol miles cost .   :(

you can buy a trailer load of compost of our local council for £40 its about 4-5 ton of it.its the stuff that has been recycled from wheelie bin collections, havnt seen any yet so dont know what its like.

I'll think again about the mushroom compost. I have to say that I wouldn't buy household compost from my local council - I've seen what goes in it - brambles, couch grass, potato haulms. All manner of things ...
