New to chooks - looking for breeder in West Yorkshire?
« on: January 02, 2010, 18:13 »
Hello there,

My OH and I are starting on the road to keeping our own chooks. After what seems like weeks of research on t'interweb and lurking on the forum we've discovered that Pontefract is not the centre of the chook universe.
We are looking for 4 POL hybrids - does anyone know of a reputable breeder in West Yorkshire?

Thanks,

F-L.

Have a look at the poultry breeder pages here:

http://www.poultry.allotment-garden.org/poultry-suppliers/live-poultry-egg-supplier-england.php

There's a lot of entries in Yorkshire that may fit your bill.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

If you don't mind travelling a bit, this one's not too far.

Sets a low standard and fails to achieve it.

Storrs poultry is towards Sheffield, but have good range and look after their birds (they are also on the poultry pages and have a website - they are open 9-5 mon to sat and 9-12 on a sun).

The chap at Outgate is called Shaun.  I've never met him, but he sounds really nice on the phone!  And he is fairly knowledgeable too!

hi - i've got all my recent girls from Raw Green Cottages in South Yorkshire which is not a million miles away from Ponte - I live in Wakefield.  They are really helpful and friendly.  I've not got their details to hand but they have a website on the internet with a mobile contact number.
cheers  :)

Thank you again for the different suggestions we'll be ringing round soon.  I just need to get the o/h to finalise the design and build the coop and run - apparently we should be ready for the chucks by the end of this month (hmmmm..).  We were out today (in the snow!) clearing the garden where it's going to be sited.  It seemed like a good way to work off the Christmas and New Year excess too!

Thanks for that. They advertise in a Smallholder magazine but it is a long way for us to go if they don't look after their birds. :)

I've been there a few times and they have a lot of full free ranging and some stock in large barn areas (including some wonderful peafowl) - all birds seemed happy last time I went. I did see a little feather pecking, but that isnt unusual in such a large enterprise, and most importantly no coughs and sneezes in the birds and they do vaccinate as well for a few diseases. They are really helpful on the phone as well if you have a problem after to talk you through it.

I might just be off there in the Spring (you know green grass and leaves, blue sky and sun with heat in - no snow) to get some ducks! :)
