Any recommendations for Red Onions from seed?
« on: August 18, 2018, 10:07 »
After the success with Globos and the dismal failure with sets planted in Spring racing each other to grow flower stalks, I am planning to grow most of the onions from seed for next season..

Can anyone recommend a red one that tastes good please, and is a round variety rather than a long one?

I've grown Red Baron the last few years and found that they give decent sized, good flavoured bulbs (they are on the small size this year but that's probably because I didn't water them as much as I should have and they're in a slightly shady position) that keep well - the last of last year's crop was used in July.

I don't know about red onions, but I usually grow Long Red Florence, which looks sort of like an elongated red onion.  In the right season these can grow to quite a generous size, and rarely bolt.

Yes, Long Red Florence are reliable, but they have thick necks and don't keep very long. I think SSB's grown these before anyway.

Yes they didn't keep so well, you're right on that! Red Baron sounds a possibility, so thank you Mr Dog
