Use Leaf mould
« on: November 13, 2010, 08:17 »
I have a large bin of 2 yr old leaf mould which has rotted down nicely. I used the previous batch to make potting compost(with added comfrey) but I still have a lot left so wont be making any more this year. Whats the best use for leaf mould in a no dig system? The soil is black clay but well worked by previous allotmenteers.
Which plants would benefit most from it:

raspberries
gooseberries
blueberries
asparagus
apples

Leaf mould made from mixed deciduous leaves tends to be about neutral pH so would be fine as a mulch for just about everything.

In the more unlikely event it was made partly or wholly from pine needles it will be more acidic and therefore best suited to raspberries and blueberries. Asparagus doesn't enjoy acid conditions so it would probably be best not to use it on them.

Like all composts it's best regarded as a soil conditioner, although it does contain useful amounts of nutrients. (A big plus is that it's much less likely to cause a flush of weeds due to ungerminated seeds which is often the case with home-made garden compost!)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

Ta.
I'll measur the ph, but from what you say, it should be neutral, so I'll just put it on the raspberries as they are my favourite :)

I checked my last yrs leaves yesterday and was surprised to find they have rotted down really  well.

Was going to put it round my rhubarb and gooseberrys today.
I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

I use mine when sowing carrots. It marks the row (as it's darker than the soil)

I had chucked some on my potato bed prior to planting and after I harvested my no dig spuds the soil was beautifully friable

It would be ok for any of those in your list

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
