new plot
« on: March 02, 2006, 13:30 »
Hello all,
Have just aquired a 9.5 perch plot . This has had several tonnes of manure put on it (last year) and has just been ploughed/rotivated and cleared by the local authority.

What can i use to protect the soil that i am not currently using and besides the obvious such as Spuds has anyone any suggestions as to what can go in now?? :)

Hi 101
Your allotment seems about the size of both of mine put together. I'd suggest you could plant some broad beans now. I love them and the foliage makes compost.
If you're going to have a ot of unused space, you could use a green manure as well. I use agricultural mustard after potatoes - it clears eelworm and gives a great pile of green compost material/
Don't be in too much of a hurry, this weather is not good for planting and Spring doesn't start until the 21st of March with the vernal equinox.
Potatoes traditionally were planted at Easter - I reckon it's a little early for them now.
