Blight on my tomatoes
« on: August 07, 2011, 10:39 »
Found blight on my Stupice tomato plant this morning.  First ripening tomato clearly has it and it looks as if it has spread to 2 Gardener's Delight and 1 Aurora plant nearby where the foliage has suddenly gone yellow almost overnight.

I will have to dig up and hope it is not too late to save the other 2 Stupice and 1 Aurora plant at the other end of the garden, but I fear I have lost the lot.

Second year in a row I have had blight, but at least last year I got a good crop before it struck.  Not one single tomato this year.

I am not going to bother growing tomatoes again until I get a greenhouse.
 :(

yellow foliage..or black soggy patches on stems and leaves?

Or furry/powdery grey/brown patches?

The first and the 2nd are unlikely to be blight....is there a blight outbreak in your area? If not I would suspect Botrytis, rather than blight.

Pictures would help!

Just taken some pics, will post in a few minutes.  No outbreak in our area yet as far as I am aware but we have had lots of full Smiths periods over the last 2 weeks.  I have seen blight before and I think this is it, but will be grateful for an expert diagnosis!

Here are a couple of pics.

First is of the tomato from the Stupice.  The second is one of the suddenly yellowing Gardener's Delight.

The rotten fruit looks more like botrytis to me..but I'm no expert and it's entered at the stem end :(
The plant with yellow leaves look healthy apart from the few yellow leaves, which I'd remove, and see what happens.
Whole plants seem to collapse overnight with blight whereas botrytis seems to get just bits and pieces, unless it manages to get into the main stem through a bit of damage or cut.

The RHS blight page is here, so you can compare

Thanks Mum.  I'll work on the basis that it is botrytis and see what happens.
If it's blight I'll lose the lot, if it's not I might be able to rescue something.

For what it's worth, I agree with Mum!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Would just like to mention that Mum and DD's diagnosis was just right.  Even though the botrytis was at the stem end, the plant has done OK and I have only had 1 other tomato affected.  Mind you, it now has leaf curl and got knocked over by the strong wind (again...) this weekend.  Nevertheless I have had ripe tomatoes from the plant and there are quite a few to come.  So thanks for the advice not to rip out the plant straight away.

The Gardener's World is still looking a bit unhappy though, but I have a good crop of green tomatoes waiting to go red if there is ever any sunshine or warmth.
