More apple pruning advice, please
« on: September 14, 2018, 15:44 »
As well as the mature apple trees referred to in a thread last month, I also have a couple of newer ones with a sort of weeping willow habit. These are Laxton Superb which are about five years old and which produced large luscious fruit this year. Their only problem is that they have a sort of weeping habit which, although making them quite attractive to look at, unless the branches are extensively propped up, leaves the fruit at rabbit height. I'm tempted to reduce the length of these lateral branches by about a half but would welcome any advice please?

That's what Id be doing  ;) .  Keep the laterals shortish and thicken them up, you'll still be wrestling against the weight of the fruit in the autumn but it should help, any loss of fruit in branch length will be compensated for by keeping Peter and his mates off them.

Now if only the same thing kept them out of the reach of squirrels  :(
