John Innes No 2
« on: July 18, 2018, 20:49 »
I usually buy general purpose compost, but decided this time to get John Innes No 2 for potting on some plants. Just opened the packet and used some tonight and was surprised at how sandy it was - felt like it was 50% sand. Does this seem right?

It does feel sandy usually.  I mix it 50/50 with multi- purpose for potting on and that seems to work well.  It can be very heavy for new roots on its own.

Hi John Innes compost is sandy I used to make it when I was at school it consists of sterilized sandy loam peat fertilizer and lime, seed has no fertilizer number 1 low fertilizer 2 a bit more 3 has most and used mainly for long term planting in pots  mixing with multipurpose compost changes the nutrient content of both composts, just add peat or peat alternative to bulk John Innes compost up  John Innes compost is made to a very strict code and the manufactures won't accept responsibility if it's been changed and plants die off   jezza
