Tomatoes
« on: February 07, 2011, 21:40 »
I have 'Roma' tomato seeds in my collection for the coming season, but as I have never grown 'Roma' before I'm a little wary of the outcome. I know 'Roma' is a bush variety, but on what I've read the results in taste and yield are to say the least, sketchy. Can anyone give me a definite yes or no on this variety? Taste is more important than quantity in my mind, but can anyone with experience of 'Roma' tomatoes experience help? Thank-you for your time.

IMO good for sauces and cooking, decent but sometimes latish yield .
Not good for eating in salads.

I grew a few of them last year. They were good, tough plants and give me a very big crop of fruit. However, they are mostly for cooking rather than eating fresh. I used mine for making loads of passata but they're also good for making sundried toms.

I grew three plants last year and got a great yield. They can be a bit thuggish though and produce loads of dense foliage which spreads quite a way if you let it.

As others say, they are best for cooking rather than eating raw. I still have loads of pots of pureed Roma in the freezer which I use for tomato soup.

In total agreement with everyone else, grew them specifically for cooking as they have few seeds. Never tried one raw so no idea what they taste like on that front. Did ripen quite late (and got hit by blight) but that was most probably because I planted them out late.

ive grown these for a few years now, and to be honest although i always get a good yield, i have never been that impressed with their taste :(

i have some seeds left over from last year so have just sowed a few, but this year i am going to try rio grande instead for my cooking variety.  time will tell if i have made the right decision

Quite agree  ;) Nice to slice and put on pizza too but not such a great taste raw.

grew them last year; started them late sowing in unheated greenhouse in April, so they were just ripening when it started to get a bit cold. Just pulled up the plants and shook them over a trug- easiest toms to harvest. Got about 15 kilos each of red and green (most ripened later in greenhouse) from a half double row. Made loads of passata and tom and chillli chutney.

I used mine for drying and they were fine. But they take up too much room in my little space, and they were not memorable enough to bother again.

I'd echo this.
