i spent hours pouring over this site its brilliant.if u use the advanced search u can search by dry matter content so u can choose how floury or waxy u want ur spuds.also tells u the resistance to the various diseases and pests.
then i just got to the nearest place that has the varietys i want.

Can anyone tell me when, roughly, Wilco's get their seed potatoes in?

Thanks.
We lived for days on nothing but food and water.

Exactly meterman.

At the place I go to you can buy as many or as few as you want - still only £1 a kilo. I went mad with the numbers of varieties last year as I wanted to trial what did well in my soil and resisted the slugs.

I know what I want this year!

OOh Dave, where do you go then?I 'm not far from you...adn £1 a kilo sounds fantastic. What varieties do they sell?

You expect me to remember them all!

It's Brookside Nurseries, Cropston Road, Anstey.

That is a great selection they have and at a very good price. :)

Wow what a lot of messges, thanks for the info guys. My local garden centres only seem to get theirs in time for main crop or 2nd early if lucky, not in time to chit firsts.

I'll make an effort to visit the allotment shop (it's never open when I'm there in a very Pratchett-type 'one of those shops' way :? ) and see if they stock anything. I've had seeds before from Wilkos but not potatoes, so worth a look.
My music teacher was right. If you have to make a mistake, make it good and big and loud; with a bit of luck people will think that it was always meant to be like that.

What can I say, they have a great supplier
Seed potatoes could be arriving into garden centres a bit later this year if the cold weather keeps up like this.
The risk of frost damage is too high to transport them just now.

Thanks DD...will definitely be pre ordering from Brookside then! Just a question of what varieties...... I also didn't do very well with Charlotte this year.....but there's so many to choose from.

I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure......perhaps sitting with a pen, paper and a glass of wine after work tomorrow night will help me choose.....

Oddly enough Charlotte were one of my best crops, so was "Ambo" but they're not listed this year.

Have a look at this thread. It summarises how various varieties did for me and other contribute as well.

Happy camper, I've pre-ordered my spuds  :D from Brookside. I hadn't realised that some places will supply singles, so much easier than faffing with weights. And I don't have to drag a toddler round the shops searching for the varieties I'd like - result!

(claps hands with excitement, it's just too sad I know   )

I agree that pound for pound, sorry kilo of kilo I pay more at Marshals but the very first year I bought seed potatoes it was from wilkos, I thought I had a great deal, paid very little for the seeds but had the worst year ever. I had huge gaps in my crop from poor germination where my dad, under similar conditions, had as good a year as any with his Marshals spuds. I agree entirely that you get what you pay for and I choose to pay a bit more for what I see as a superior product. I try to grow enough veg to last me through the year and for the past few years I have not needed to buy any shop bought spuds through out the year. If you get the crop you want from wilko seed potatoes then good luck to you. It may have been a bad batch that I bought that year and am being unfair to wilkos but with all the labour input into growing potatoes I would rather give my self a head start with the quality of the seeds so what little time I can spend in the garden is put to the best use possible. I found the same results with my onions and garlic from a large chain of garden centres and have bought them from Marshals ever since. Forgive me if this question has already ben discussed but does anyone keep there own seed potatoes from the previous years crop? :D

When the seed potatoes arrive in the wilkos stores could someone post up the producer numbers on the bags.
I would be interested to know if they are English or Scottish seed potatoes. 8)
