top tip for stubborn sticky labels
« on: August 10, 2014, 16:32 »
If you re-use your jars ad infinitum, you will probably have struggled to get the last of the sticky label residue off them at some time or other. I've just discovered that the good old-fashioned brillo pad does the job very efficiently. I hope I'm not trying to teach granny to suck eggs, but I've tried so many different things for this over the years, and this is the best yet.

We had this problem as well, and chums here recommended a good squirt of furniture polish does the trick!

It works extremely well, and leaves you with a clear section every time!

And the house smells nice afterwards!

Thanks for the tips guys: there always seem to be a few jars I cannot get squeaky clean, so this is really helpful  :D :D

I find that nail polish (with acetone - not the acetone free ones) works brilliantly - just a few swipes and it's done

Or petrol lighter refill, or white spirit. I try them all in order till I find one that works.  Haven't tried the furniture polish one though... :nowink:

I had a job getting the labels off of wine bottles and found that some were easier than others.  I now score them, stick them in a bowl of hot water and leave to soak overnight.  Some then come off really easily with a window type scraper and any glue can be scoured off.  I usually avoid solvents because of the smell, but I'll deffo give the polish a try, so thank you Mr G for that.  :)

If you have a dishwasher auntie I find that cleaning off the labels with the nail polish remover and then putting them on in there works really well with any smells/odours

I tried the furniture polish this afternoon but it didn't seem to work. Perhaps I am using the wrong sort.

I either fill the jar with very hot water, & leave for a few minutes to soften the glue & then scrub with a Brillo pad after removing the label. Or I spray with wd40. They all go in the dishwasher to wash/sterilise. If stored for a while I dishwasher again before use to sterilise & then dry off in a hot oven.

I have a scrunchy scourer which is great with a soak first .

I always try this first....usually works. I fill the jar with near boiling water and put the lid on. Leave for a few minutes for the glue to soften and the label just peels off. Have to be careful not to get the label wet though.

The soapy metallic cleaning pads work for me mostly.
If not, I have a special spray ;) :)
