Conservatory growing over winter...
« on: August 24, 2012, 15:20 »
A simple question (probably difficult answer).

I have a heated (although only gently) a conservatory, and I was wondering if I was to start off some courgettes now and grow in buckets (end of Aug 2012) would I get any fruit between now and mid winter?

I have some courgettes planted in grow bags on the allotment outside - but they have gone strange (I think nutrients getting washed out with the amount of rain) and are dying off - very few fruits now and leaves dry / brown, stems rotting (not good  ).

on the other hand - My yellow patty pans next to them are doing quiet well (I assume due to bushy appearance and rain doesn't hit the compost as easily.

Any advice received greatfully.

Cheers

Courgettes suffer from lack of sunlight and temperature - well mine do in those conditions. You could probably attain the temperature in your conservatory, but I feel you might not be able to give them enough light, unless you provided UV... Also, you might benefit from a self-pollinating variety if you were growing indoors.

Thanks Argyllie,

Didnt think about lack of sun light just thinking about the warmth.  I think I will leave it for this year... looked into the cost of UV lights and then thought... hmmm can see police stopping by as they seem to be used by certain alternative 'gardeners'.

thanks again.
