Shady Lawn advice
« on: August 05, 2009, 11:33 »
We moved into our new build 4 years ago and had the back lawn turfed.
On our clay soil, in a shady garden its struggled a bit though. Weve spiked it, added sand and still its pretty sad. Considering seeding it to help it on its way? Weve got four lads and walk all over it to put the washing out and get to the veg beds - so it doesnt have to be pretty! Just green! Looking for a bit of a long term plan to get it growing. Any advice gratefully received! Ta!

I have a shady lawn  and its a beast to keep growing.
Since there's so much traffic, suggest you add a nice pathway along the popular routes (just look for the worn parts as I did). You might also want to add a small shade flower garden in a spot - loads of shade loving flowers to choose from.
If you still want green grass, buy only grass seed for shade areas, nothing else. There really is a huge difference. And you'll need to keep it well watered all year as the tree roots (usual reason why its shady) will suck the life out of the soil and turf. Hope you have good water rates  ;)
Otherwise, ask your local garden centre to recommend hardy, short height wildflowers for shade which you could seed among the grass (minimizes mowing and watering).

Thanks trillium, waters not a problem, infact, quite the opposite, weve that much clay, on a wet day you can hear it squelch!! Whats the best time to seed and what preparation should I do first?
