potatoes in bags query
« on: June 16, 2010, 17:47 »
i was talking to a guy on the plot today about growing spuds in bags.i like some others have put 6" of compost in a bag put 3 seed potatoes in fertiliser and then 6"compost on top and topped it up as they grow.now someone else told him that with every layer of compost you should add more seed potatoes, but does that not overload the bag with plants? how has everyone else done theirs please?.
i dont suffer with insanity..........i enjoy every minute of it.

Hello dave,
I have grown my new pots in tubs, buckets, compost bags and ikea bags the big blue ones.
I place little compost in the bottom with seed pots then just build the compost up as the leaves grow i have never added any more seed pots and i have always had plenty of pots.
Good luck happy growing, theres nothing quite like a plate of new pots from the garden yum yum.

i have grown mine as you discribed spuds in the bottom and earthed up , but i have read about planting again as you earth up, the idea is to plant 2 spuds and then when you earth them up you plant another coup lat 90 degrees to the first two giving them room to grow.

mmmmm   a project to try with my Christmas planting spuds  ;)
when im with my 9yr old she's the sensible one

I have an experiment up and running. On the lottie table was a bag of leftover seed spuds, with only tiny chits...which gave me an idea  :nowink:

I took the 4 biggest and have put them in a tray in the fridge. I hope they will start to chit when I take them out in August so I can plant them in a tub to grow for Christmas. Who knows but worth a try, as it will have cost nothing

Supermarket spuds are not certified virus free seed potatoes.

You run the risk of introducing diseases.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
