bearded dragon information
« on: January 14, 2013, 17:56 »
My son has informed me he is saving up to buy a bearded dragon.
Any information or advice about them would be brilliant. He is 10 years old if that helps.

Hmmmm, if he can be scrupulous about hygiene, as they can carry salmonella and tend to walk through all their dirty bits, they are fairly easy to keep with the right research. But there are an awful lot in rescue waiting for homes, where people get fed up with them as they don't really do much.

Though there may be someone who knows different! :D

Yep, agree I do not find them the best lizard, my leopard gecko is better.

Many bearded dragons are free to a good home at the moment & then nobody wants them.

You will need a 4ft x 2ft x2ft vivarium for 1 adult, best kept singularly.

Can eat lots of bugs & salad daily, so can be expensive to feed.

Need a new UV 12% tube every 6months to a year (Arcadia), A heat basking bulb on a pulse stat 100wat bulb, 12 hours a day with the UV on.

Basking spot of around 110 d, cooler at the other end of the viv.

Bugs need gut loading with veg 24hrs  before feeding to the lizard & dusting with vitamin/calcium powder.

A care guide here.

Reptiles make great pets, I have 1 bearded dragon, 1 leopard gecko, 6 adult & 7 baby crested geckos.

But you do need to get their housing, feeding, lighting & supplements right or you will end up with a sick pet.

If you do your homework first, they are really easy, but a bearded dragon does need more input in time & effort than some other lizards.   :)

Here is my Ruby,

For a kiddie, easy to hold, not too quick, generally tame & don't bite, but they are the couch potato of the lizard world.
Awake by day when their light is on, light off by night, so they get a good nights rest.
So, if in the childs bedroom, won't keep him awake ( the crickets might!) & awake when he comes in from school.

Can carry salmonella in their poo, but unless you eat their poo, not much risk when washing hands ect, more risk from raw meat.

Live approx 8 - 10 years, others like geckos can live up to 20 years. Kiddies grow up, hence I inherited Mr Geckly my leo, after 2 years of being owned by a young relative.

Hi some more care sheets, maybe join a forum for advice, but explain if a 10 year old will be viewing, as they can be flaming.

Be wary of advice from "pet shops", certain chains/shops are after your money & not a lot else.

I asked a work colleague today, who has geckos and a dragon, and she said the dragon she has is quite tetchy in comparison to the geckos, and can bite, whereas the geckos are very placid indeed.

Sorry I forgot to ask her which sort of geckos she has  :(
