I don't need 500+ seeds!
« on: August 23, 2018, 15:33 »
Does anyone know of a company that supplies seeds in reasonable quantities for the small veggie grower?
Thats a grwoer of small quantities of veggies, not one with altitude awareness conditions (even though I'm all of 5'7"). :D

I've popped the request into Gurgle's slot, but all the regular seedsman crop up.

Cheers,  Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

Why Moreveg?

Order Form
Why MoreVeg?

What makes us different?

The people at MoreVeg are gardeners.  We like to know how the veg we eat is grown and the best way to do this is to grow it ourselves from seed and eat our own produce.

However we found that buying seed can be very wasteful as so much seed is usually supplied that we were paying for a large amount of seed that we knew we did not have the room to grow.

This meant we couldn’t try new and different varieties because the cost of buying seed and the waste was excessive.  So we decided to start MoreVeg.

Just what I'm looking for.  Many thanks Mr Dog (whatever breed you are)!  Cheers,  Tony.

Glad the info's useful. Should have added that I've used them in the past with no issues. They do regular (monthly) offers where you can buy several varieties at a discount on the individual prices: August was overwintering onions and July Oriental greens.

Useful to know, my plot neighbour and I have an agreement on seeds, we share packs between us to reduce wastage. we decide who is buying what in the Autumn/ Winter beforehand.

Hold on. Don't jump in with both feet. Yes the packet prices are low, but think about what your needs are and what the germination rates are.

If it's something with which you can guarantee 90% germination, that's fine, tomatoes for example, but who in their right mind would pay 1p per parsnip seed?  Moles seed for example, cost £2.80 for 1,000. You may need that quantity to get a reasonable germination. From this company that quantity would cost £100!

Parsnips
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I'm going to sow as many leftover seeds as possible in trays and pots and flog them for 50p per plant, to recoup the cost of the seeds. :D

i think I used morveg a few years ago to buy lots of different herbs and salad crops. I had good germination rates with all the packets.

Needing 1000 parsnip seeds to get reasonable germination !!! Don't use seed more than 2 years old and don't sow too early. I would expect and usually get around 70/80 percent germination from my parsnip seed. Sowing into cold, wet soil is the biggest problem with parsnips.

I always buy more seed than I really need so I try to use that seed for two seasons if possible I know you do pay more for FI seed but then if you want to try a new variety then it will cost slightly more

and although Moles seeds are larger quantaties i think its good value for what you get and it is a good idear to share seeds with fellow gardeners where possible but i take you piont about bying smaller quantaties it does make sence if you only have limmited space for growing

I tend to buy for the variety that I want and from a selection of different suppliers, so end up with different amounts of seed.  Over the years I have found that the shelf life indicated on the packet is generally very conservative indeed.  Everybody says parsnips don't last long, but I have had success with seed 4 or 5 years old - I have found the temperature of the ground and moisture just as relevant to germination.
As a result I rarely get rid of seed and often as not it comes up.
I do keep my seeds in airtight conditions in a dark cellar though.
