gooseberries or currants
« on: June 21, 2015, 12:32 »
Need some help identifying the attached plants.
They were in the plot I got already..

This one is 2-3 weeks old. The gooseberry has lost most leaves from sawfly. Is it a white gooseberry? When would it be best to collect the fruit?

What kind of currant is this? Few leaves are wilted and did notice some black aphids.

With the currant bushes, the easiest way to tell if they are blackcurrants or not is to smell the leaves, as they smell strongly of blackcurrant. If not, they are red or white currants. Redcurrants should be ripening soon and will glow red of course, and whitecurrants ripen to translucent pale yellowy colour, but the bushes look the same as redcurrants.

With your gooseberries, the best way to tell if they are truly ripe is to gently feel one and if it gives slightly, it is ripe. Red gooseberries usually darken to completely red.

I hope that helps a bit
