Title: free food!!
Post by: agapanthus on September 09, 2009, 22:26
Went foraying with Munt a couple of days ago. This is a pic of the first lot we collected....we went back after we'd put them in the car and picked  about the same amount again!!

...they are a mix of ceps and bay boletus and a few others that we had'nt seen before.
This is a strange one....I think it's either a newly emerging stinkhorn or a stubble rosegill....but if someone else knows for sure I'd love to know what it is.

You are very brave.  I would be worried I picked the poisonous ones.  How do you make sure that you don't?

If you can find an expert in this field....go along with him. We've been out a couple of time with a Fife ranger. We found him in a local 'what's on' leaflet. There might be a similar thing going on in your area!

Have a quick look on your local council website.....this is usually the time of year the experts go around.  :)

We have lovely field mushrooms, but no good at the moment as we've had no rain
Still, wouldn't need to dry them, as soon as they pop up they go crispy  ::)

I'm going to have to do that Aggie, I've been amateur foraging for a little while now but don't have the knowledge when it comes to mushrooms and, as you say, they are luvverly!

Despite having several books on the topic, I don't have the confidence in identifying the correct ones - that's where a guide would be a great help.

Yeah, I think I'll look into that.

Excellent haul, by the way!  :)

we had a good mushroom book with symbols that were a skull and cross bones, (poisonous) a knife and fork, (edible) and a knife and fork crossed out, (in-edible but not poisonous)
My son, (about 7-8 at the time)said the skull meant poisonous, the next meant eat with a knife and fork, the other, eat with your fingers!

How scrummy, none of that forced rubbish that taste of nothing >:(. Mushrooms are another thing that just don't taste like they did when we were kids :(

I woudn't know where to start either. What you gonna cook up then, just save them and add them to stuff?

You're lucky to find ceps like that Aga. ,  Over here they're getting more and more difficult to find. You have to be up and out at the crack of dawn: they're all gone by 10 o'clock !

Thanks to this thread I have been motivated to have a look on our local Parks Trust site to see what they have on offer.  There is a foraging session on 10th October, going to call tomorrow to book.  It is £5 for two hours in the woods with the expert which I thought was a bargain, and I LOVE mushrooms!
