Floppy aubergines
« on: April 27, 2010, 16:55 »
My aubergines are having a big growth spurt and in the last couple of days they started getting floppy. The leaves look healthy, and are very big, but the stems are bending. Is this normal? Do they need to be staked? Is it a sign of some other problem?
Also, when repotting them, should they be planted at the same level or a bit deeper, as with tomatoes?

I do put canes around mine to stop them getting top heavy. As you say they've had a sudden growth spurt with the warm weather and need a bit of help :)

I only ever do aubs at the same depth.....I'll be interested to see what the others say :)

Yep, stake them, they seem to grow big leaves before they get the stalk to support them. Later it will turn woody and be a bit more sturdy.

I definitely remember mine being exactly the same last year and they remained like all summer and produced some wonderful aubergines (I did put a support cane in). Jude.

Thanks for the advice and for reassuring me - I'm quite fond of these beautiful plants and I was afraid they were going horribly wrong...

They are quite ornamental aren't they with the lovely soft leaves and pretty flowers - I planted mine out in the flower boarder last year :)
