Moving Toms into a cold G/house
« on: March 11, 2011, 09:54 »
When do you move your toms into a cold G/House?
Last year I think I did it early April but I can't really remember.
Is early April too soon?
When will you be putting your Toms in to the G/H
99% Organic and 1% Slug Pellets.

Allotment holder since 27th May 2007.

Unheated greenhouse - late April for me at the earliest, but of course it's weather dependent.

You really need a min temp of 10oC overnight.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

just checked and I planted mine in the ghouse border on 8th May, and still had to drape bubblewrap over them and around the roots  2 days later cos frost was forecast

My pampered toms get brought in from the greenhouse every night just to be on the safe side.  They're quite happy out there during the day even this early, but the further north you go perhaps wait a couple of weeks for the chilly Midlands and a month more for the frozen wastelands of the north.....  ;)

I move mine out to the cold greenhouse anytime after mid April, but put polysheet over them most nights to keep them warm ;)

flippin eck, I haven't sowed mine yet. Was going to this weekend but it's still miserable and cold up here and the house cools down quite a bit at night after the heating goes off.

It was mid April when I started to put them out last year but I was bringing them back indoors at night until the end of the month.

Its no wonder people get the impression their toms should be underway, one garden centre we visited today had blocks of 4 modules at £1.99 per block. No warnings about not putting them outside, or in unheated greenhouse, yet.

Unless otherwise stated it can be assumed ALL posts are by Pa Snip

Mine have been out in the g/house for a couple of weeks now... it has been very mild and no  frosts, although I think we might get a bit of frost tonight so I will be covering them all  up with fleece after the sun goes down. Tomatoes are doing really well but chillies and peppers are a bit slower

I have have had toms in my unheated greenhouse for a couple of weeks now but inside a plastic covered 'mini greenhouse' placed inside the cold greenhouse.  This has worked really well so far  :) I open the front in the day and zip it back up at night. I lost a cucumber though  :(

I was late sowing my tomatoes so I bought some on ebay (pelican_plants as it happens). They've arrived and are good plants of varieties I haven't tried before but looking them up they seem to be reasonable

I potted on about 60 toms about a month ago, and keep them in an unheated greenhouse before they're hardened off to go outside. I choose the best of them, and keep a dozen of these in the greenhouse, to get fruiting first.

Mrs Growster places those clear plastic covers over them if the forecast looks anywhere near bad, but we've always done this and they seem to thrive.
