Ryobi & ExpandIt parts....???
« on: August 01, 2006, 21:20 »
Been thinking about getting a petrol strimmer and quite like the idea of getting a Ryobi strimmer and one of the 'Expand It' rotovator heads to use on it.....   but are these any good?  Are they powerfull when used from the Ryobi strimmer motors?

Anyone used these? they have all sorts of extras too..... the hedge trimmer attachment could become usefull too.....  unless they proove to be inferior goods.....!

Any help?

Just a thought I have a theory that these things you can put loads of attachments on seem very good value but I'm not sure they are. It seems to me that the attachments are quite pricy and by the time you have added up the original cost and the cost of all the bitts and bobs there's not much in it against buying several specialised tools to do each job.  Also the other thing that bothers me is this if you  have a piece of kit designed to one job and then modify it by fitting an attachment of some sort are you sacrificing efficiency and potentially overstressing the power unit. Like I say just a thought and a very personal opinion, anyone else got any comments?

I feel the same about screwdrivers. I don't like those multi ones because a small headed screwdriver needs a small handle and a large head a large handle.

I have a Ryobi strimmer with Expandit facility and must say that I think it is fantastic.

As  brush cutter/strimmer it is brilliant.  It's quick to change from one to the other and eats everything in its path.

The rotovator/tiller is also pretty darned good as long as the soil isn't too hard to start with.  I have used it to grind a fine tilth after using a bigger unit (like a Merry Tiller) before planting out and had very satisfactory results for very little effort.

I've also used it to run between rows of crops instead of using the hoe, especially when it looks a bit flat following a good watering.

It takes about 10 seconds to swap between being a strimmer and a tiller.

I also have the leaf blower option which I bought on a whim without expecting very much from it.  This is also brilliant.  I use it after cutting the grass to blow bits off the patio etc. instead of using a broom.  It takes seconds and almost no effort.  It is very powerful and should be great for removing the leaves later.

The best bit of this system is that all the attachments are swapped with no effort and no need for tools (except changing from strimmer to brushcutter).  I wouldn't be without mine now.

In short its MONEY WELL SPENT in my opinion.

Hope this helps
I may not know what I'm doing but I might as well do something and see what happens.
