Title: Chick hatched with eyes closed
Post by: raeburg on March 25, 2010, 13:59
Hi all

the last of my Buff Orpingtons hatched with what appears to be both eyes completely sealed.  It took a long time to hatch (nearly 2 days) and there doesn't seem to be eyelids.  There was also a lot of greenish gunk in the shell.  I suspect that the only solution is to help it on it's way, so what's the easiest and kindest way to dispatch a day old chick.

So sorry Raeburg  :( Pop the chick's neck over a piece of wood edge and break its neck is the quickest way. It does sound in a bad way, but maybe Ann or someone with more experience will be along with an idea of what has caused this (although I still suspect dispatch is the only answer  :( ) xxx

I agree with Cara, best to do it asap. Unfortunately these things happen often without any reason I'm afraid, so sorry  :( xx.

Deed has already been done as in developed a massive umbilical hernia.  :(  Took it to the vets (only a coule of minutes way) and they did the deed.
