Picking strawberries slightly under-ripe against slugs?

I accidently knocked a nice but slightly under-ripe strawberry off the plant yesterday and put it on the windowsill at home like you do tomatoes to try to ripen it up. It was mostly red but showing slightly white on one half.

It was ripe this morning and tasted ok in my muesli.

Might this be a way of winning against the dereaded slugs and woodlice who wait around my strawberry beds in their sleeping bags ready for first light to get to the ripe ones before I get down there?

I think, generally, they say that soft fruit like strawerries and raspberries don't ripen once picked, but looks like you got lucky with that one!

They ripen almost over night if you pick them at blush stage,

You can get white strawbs that are ripe but have been shaded from the sun, a blackbird knew it before i did!

I never pick strawbs with any hint of green.

I think the other thing I will do next year is grow strawberries in containers so the fruits hang over the container edges. Fruits anywhere near soil level just get devoured by slugs and - who can really blame them!

An extract from the StrawberryPlants.org website...

http://strawberryplants.org/2010/05/growing-strawberries/

Strawberries should be dry when they are picked. Wet berries do not do well and will mold quickly, and, unlike tomatoes, will not ripen after being picked. As soon as they are harvested, it is best to place unwashed strawberries in cool, dry, shady place (a refrigerator is best).

I would say they do ripen pretty quick from my experience. As do raspberry's.

Yes, just ripened a whole saucer full from yesterday for tea tonight. It seems they do ripen on a warm and sunny windowsill.

I picked quite a few unripe ones the other day and ate them ripe today. They definitely do ripen when picked early.

They ripen over a day and a bit once picked in the right way.
I haven't had a great crop, but what there is I like to eat myself and not leave for the slugs.
I remember picking some strawberries for a week back in the 90s for a very well known Organic box farm in my area. It was their way of picking strawberry.

If you pick them a little under-ripe, try sitting them next to some ripe banana's as they are one of the fruits that give off the most ethylene, which causes other fruits to ripen, it may work with strawberries, it may not, but i'm going to give it a whirl  :)
It's like a jungle sometimes, it makes me wonder how i keep from going under......
