White fly on kales and cabbages
« on: May 08, 2018, 19:35 »
Hi can anyone help me regarding White fly?.  Two weeks ago I planted
out Hispi, Cavello Neo and red Curly Kale.  As I have suffered from flea Beatle before, I have invested in micro mesh, but tonight they are covered in white fly.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I could manage this please?

Thanks.

Sorry to hear that they are annoying!
I have tried blasting them off with a sprayer loaded with a dilute solution of washing up liquid. Seems to have some effect even if only knocking them off the plants with pressure of the spray.( probably a totally non licensed activity though!!)
Good luck

Over the last few years using debris netting, and getting lots of whitefly - I've come to the conclusion that netting with a mesh of 4-7mm gives the best of both worlds. It lets ladybirds and other predators in to eat the whitefly, but the holes are small enough keep the cabbage white butterflies out.

Your best option now would probably be those yellow sticky papers that you hang inside the netting. Good luck.

edit to correct mesh size.

Hmm that’s disappointing, I was going to invest in the fine veggie mesh this year for precisely the same reason☹️. Could it be the whitefly were already on the plants before you planted them(she suggests hopefully?)  I’ve used debris nett8ng for the last few years & tge whitefly have got worse each year, it really puts me off.

I've given up trying to get rid of/prevent them and now simply look on them as extra protein......

A 5cm mesh? They're some big butterflies

I had Whitefly many years ago at the end of season, Sept August on some of my Kale and sprouts.
Not ever seen it at the beginning of the year.

I blame a neighbour that year who let some of his Kale overwinter and he only stripped it out the following late Summer. Remember seeing them all in the air when he removed them and some must have migrated to my garden that year.
I used a portable vacuum to suck them up off that crop and it got rid of them.
Not seen them in my garden since then.

I also always put small pots of marigolds around the garden. It deters these types of black and whitefly from settling early and being attracted.

Hi all, I am using enviroflece and I don't believe they had any whitefly on the before they were planted out.

Can I ask, does the vacuum suggest really work. How often was it completed before they went? Thanks

It worked when I used it that one time that I had an attack of Whitefly from my neighbour.
I think the idea of using a vacuum is that you can get close to the plant and suck off the whitefly without shaking or disturbing the plants. As any shaking, disturbing or direct spraying just disperses most of them and just moves them on temporarily.
It certainly did the trick then.

That is my exact problem.  I have attempted to squash them off the back of the leaves, but inevitably they fly off onto other plants.

I will give it a go - many thanks.

There's a lot of sprays that help tackle whitefly - some of them organic. I've used SB plant invigorator, which makes the plant healthy to fend off an attack and Py spray if a plant does get an unwelcome visit. Both certified organic, yet read the labels.

We have also noticed the problem with the debris netting.
