More sand than the Sahara
« on: February 15, 2018, 22:30 »
I have finally built raised beds in the new garden, hurrah. Unfortunately, the soil is extremely sandy as we are on the coast. I intend to put lots of manure on one bed, but what should go on the others in a rotation system.
The soil has very few worms in it so I guess it’s not that healthy.

It’s that darned global warming and severe coastal erosion to blame.

Good to have the beds built! I can see carrot envy coming on if your soil is as sandy as that

Anything organic is going to help... if you are going to grow runners or other beans/peas, digging two trenches the length of the bed for kitchen waste, shredded paper and chopped up cardboard will help retain moisture, and they should manage well enough. (Squashes would like manure ideally of course) and people do seem to grow good potatoes in sandy soil, and asparagus too. I daresay there are no spare piles of leafmould lying around?

Worms might appear once the weather warms up a bit. It mazes me where they come from: eggs lie dormant in the soil or blow about in the air, ready to hatch out when damp and warmer, so don't worry about the lack of them right now. We had very few to begin with on our second plot but 18m later things are much improved

Hi Ice, glad you're back to gardening again.

What your raised beds need is a compost heap. So that's the next thing to build

Thanks for the replies.  It's been hard work getting established again in a new home.  Note to self, NEVER MOVE AGAIN..........EVER.
Looking forward to growing the best ever carrots without having to buy sharp sand from Been and Queued.  The compost bin is already established in a plastic dustbin we inherited from the previous tenant, with a few minor adjustments using my trusty drill.
Thanks for the advice re the beds, i'll add some photos later. :)

Hi Ice, nice to hear from you again. Lovely that you have a new garden to start on, is it a totally blank slate for you or just needing some tweaking?
