My veggie plot
« on: January 11, 2008, 15:12 »
Hubby has offered to dig the turf out for my veggie plot this weekend. I am planning on doing raised beds. it occurred to me we could dig it out in squares so we leave "paths" of lawn between the raised beds rather than doing bark paths at a later date

any reason why this is a bad idea (guess paths need to be lawnmower wide)

When I got my plot in September we spent ages digging over areas that only ended up being paths. We changed tact half way through and now only dig the beds and leave the paths as trodden grass. IMHO it saves ALOT of work doing it this way. But you do have to keep on top of the grass/weeds on th paths, but you could always bark ontop of it later?

But as my plots fairly new, not sure if this works out best in the long run.  :?

I'm no expert on raised beds Jaye, but that is what I would do!
In fact I am seeding the paths on my allotment.

I'd say that it depends what kind of grass you have in your paths. The paths on my lottie consisted of couch grass and the roots kept spreading into the nearby beds so I dug them all up and put weed contrl material and bark down.

my advice - get a grass strimmer as you'll find grass grows tallest along the wood and the lawnmower doesn't reach there :D
Failure is only a temporary change in direction to set you straight for your next success.
