Rainbow Chard
« on: June 22, 2010, 21:20 »
My chard has been planted out for about 3-4 weeks (under glass) and is nearly a foot tall with big leaves. Do i need to keep the glass on to protect it from rabbits? Its getting a bit cramped.

I think wire would probably be better than glass - Id have thought it would have been a little too warm for them.

Salad eaters pick the leave young and eat them raw. Personally I like to leave them longer and use them like cabbage or spinach.

Hello teflon

we have rainbow chard growing perfectly happily without any cover over it at all, someone at the allotment told me that most animals/birds etc will leave it alone as they find the taste too bitter.   It's really reliable, we just cut a few leaves off here and there and they are growing back in no time, but I find that they taste better when they are quite small.

I steam it very lightly, drain and add a bit of butter, it's not to everyone's taste but we love it.

Is your rainbow chard coming up different colours?   Ours is mostly green with only the odd red one dotted in there, I am a bit disappointed really because I was expecting a more spectacular display!

I have been adding leaves to salad, but you can also use like spinach and stir fry the stems as you would celery. I made Mum eat a leaf at the weekend she said it tasted like mud, I would describe it as earthy makes me think of beetroot and it's a flavour I like  :D
